Norfork & White
Rivers

Nestled in the heart of Arkansas, the Norfork and White Rivers weave a tale of pristine waters, abundant wildlife, and outdoor adventure. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a nature enthusiast seeking tranquility, these rivers offer an unforgettable experience.

The "North Fork"

Its official name of the river is the North Fork of the White River, which it is still called in Missouri before it forms “Norfork” Lake.  The tailwater coming from the dam is what is referred to as the Norfork river or tailwater.

Below the Lake Norfork Dam, the norfork River stretches a mere 5 miles before joining the White River. However, like the White, the Norfork tailwater is known for world-class trout fishing. At low water, the Norfork tailwater offers great wade fishing. Float-fishing from a boat is popular when the power generators are at work.

Access to the river is provided through public access points. Quarry Park, just below Norfork Dam, has both a concrete boat launching ramp and public access for bank fishing and wading.

Bank fishing at the mouth of Dry Run Creek, which enters the tailwater in Quarry Park, is popular. The effluent from Norfork National Fish Hatchery flows into Dry Run Creek at rates up to 22,000 gallons per minute. This nutrient-rich water attracts trout. No special restrictions apply to those fishing at the mouth of the creek.

To improve on an already good fishery, the stretch of river from the mouth of Otter Creek to 100 yards above River Ridge Walk-In Access (approximately one mile) has been set aside as a catch-and-release area.

River Ridge Access features a handicap fishing pier and walk-in access. Norfork Public Access is located in Norfork village and also provides bank fishing at the confluence of the Norfork and White Rivers.

Water Levels

Please remember that the water levels fluctuate based upon electricity demand and flood control.  If you are wade fishing in either the Norfork or White Rivers, please take proactive precautions by seeing the estimated generation schedules below for these waterways.

A siren will sound if you are fishing at either Norfork Lake Dam or Bull Shoals Lake Dam but if you are fishing further downstream from these locations, please keep an eye out for rising water as fluctuations in the water levels rise and fall quickly without the aid of the siren warning you.

Remember: Safety first! Be cautious when wading during power generation periods.

The Norfork

Often referred to as the "Princess of Tailwaters," the Norfork River is a mere 5-mile stretch of pure fishing bliss. Its source: the cool, clear waters released from Norfork Dam. This creates a haven for rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout, making it a fly fishing destination unlike any other. The diverse underwater landscape, with riffles, pools, and rocky banks, provides a challenge for anglers of all skill levels.

Majesty and Adventure

Flowing for over 250 miles, the White River is a majestic waterway. Below Bull Shoals Dam, the river transforms into another prime trout fishery. Here, the water is calm, perfect for floating trips where you can cast a line amidst breathtaking Ozark scenery. Be prepared to encounter not just trophy trout, but also vibrant birdlife and lush vegetation lining the banks.
